Welcome to Learn to Sew at HOME for you and/or your family, to assist with your daily sewing requirements. For me, I have been sewing clothes and crafts for me and my family, as well as for markets and online auctions for over 35 years and has now become a lifestyle choice.
Having been taught the basics from scratch back in the day, at school, and passed both theory and practical based training has set me up with what I needed to start my sewing habits. As I had a family young in life I sewed clothing for them from underwear, pyjamas, swimwear, and quilts. I became self-taught in a lot of areas through experimentation.
Sharing what I know (the Art of Sewing) has been something I have wanted to do for a while now, but I have not been able to achieve this locally… too many details, so here I am online instead. A far bigger audience can be assessed by doing it this way and at less expense for both you and myself. Therefore, it is going to be a lot easier for you to learn to sew at home for your convenience.
Why You Need to Know How to Sew
Sewing isn’t just about creating a garment from scratch, but to shorten a pair of jeans or replace a zip, wow, the savings you could make on this alone. Just imagine the long-term savings of not having to pay someone to shorten your pants because they always make them too long for you!
Did your zip pop in your favorite skirt or jeans? Well, lets’ just fix that! And imagine making your children/grandchildren items for their birthdays and Christmas, that extra special touch of a home crafted item.
As my friend stated on Facebook tonight when I advertised to my friends that I was starting this website… “Wish I could sew! Immense satisfaction is always obtained sewing an item, finishing a project and then seeing it being worn”.
I could not have put it better myself. My plan is to cover whatever is needed, starting with what personal friends have already suggested, we will go from there.

When choosing a pattern to sew a garment you need to know how to read/understand your pattern cover, then your instructions (inside the envelope). These can be a little confusing at first, but no different from learning to drive. This is your “road code” to sewing.
What do you need to know before you buy your fabric?
How do you know what you need to complete your garment? I will show you where to find the information and explain what they mean.
Oh my, how do I know what size to make? As patterns come in all different sizes you need the measurements of the person you are making the item for before you go and buy a sewing pattern as they are quite pricey nowadays and why the trend is to buy PDF patterns online.
Let’s be honest, if it is all new to you, then it is a foreign language. So, let me teach you the language of sewing.
What Fabric to Use
Honestly, there are so many types of fabric on the market today. It does pay to know what fabric is suited for the project at hand and the care instructions that go with it since that normally comes with shop-bought items.
More people are becoming environmentally conscious and are aware of what they are putting on their skin and will only use natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo, hemp to wool, possum, merino, and angora.
You will find a lot of man-made out there, such as polyester, rayon, and nylon, but nothing compares to natural fibers from nature. You will need to know how to tell them apart if this of importance to you. I will be covering this in more detail for you.
